Great budget hotel in real Montmartre
It is a myth that you cannot find cheap accommodation in Paris. Yes, you can, and in the best areas as well. Montmartre is on the main tourist trail, and although most people only visit the Sacre Coeur, it is a very interesting district with a uniquely Parisian feel – if you get away a few steps from the basilica, the artists and souvenir sellers. The little Montmartre Museum in rue Cortot is worth to visit – not only for the cute but modest display, but for the reason that real Montmartre starts here. Away from the hordes of tourists it is a charming residential district famous for its little cobble-stoned streets, long flights of pedestrian stairs, little green squares and lively cafés. A little away from the “butte” – the hill – is Hotel Damremont, a budget place which we will discover on our mission to present the full spectrum of the Paris hotel scene.
The location is convenient: close to the sights on foot – not only Sacre Coeur, but also Place Clichy, the Flea Market, Pigalle, Moulin Rouge – and there are several metro stops around the hotel to connect to other parts of Paris. It is a typical Parisian neighborhood, with supermarkets, grocery stores, cafés and restaurants, so you’ll find everything you need – and can live like most Parisians do.
The 2-star hotel is modest in design – you wouldn’t expect a budget place to be too trendy, would you? – but has all the facilities one needs and is very well kept. It still has a touch of the Paris boutique hotel feel, especially if you take the double superior room. Room size is not the strength of the hotel, but that’s often the case in Paris even in higher-star establishments.
The staff was genuinely friendly and helpful – we usually stay in hotels in incognito and they didn’t know we work for a hotel blog. The lounge area is spacious and pleasant to hang around and we met a very interesting young Australian couple – very keen to practice some French.
We’ve seen some budget hotels – some fairly decent ones and some real disasters – so we can say with confidence: Hotel Damremont is a great budget choice in Paris. And Montmartre is an eternal love!
