Hotel Urbis – a convenient budget hotel in Rome
While the Historic Center – Centro Storico – is the most charming area of Rome, it is also the most expensive and most touristy, and sights such as the Vatican or the Colosseum are quite far and difficult to reach, as the area is only served by surface transport. A convenient and cheaper alternative is to stay in the Termini area. It is half hour from the Historic Center on foot if you fancy a walk, the Colosseum is even less, but you can easily get to the sights of Rome from here by metro or other means. It is also the arrival/departure point of air-port shuttles serving both airports and trains. There are plenty of good restaurants, cafés and shops in the neighborhood which has its own pleasant character.
Hotel Urbis is located only a minute from Termini on the Via Marsala side, in a historic building. While the hotel looks rustic and old from outside – in fact these old historic buildings are what give Rome its charm – the inside is modern and up to today’s standards. The staff we met were helpful, and the reception area is pleasant enough to hang out for a while.
We had two doubles but peeked in to some of the other rooms as well – there are also triple and quadruple rooms, making the hotel a perfect place for families or smaller groups. All the rooms are spacious, modern, clean and well equipped – nothing really special, but you have everything you need. The rates are extremely reasonable, and considering the location and overall quality, we believe Hotel Urbis is one of the best budget hotels in Rome.
